About Artefii
Artephius or Artefii was an early 12th century alchemist from Cordoba. Credited with a number of advances in alchemy including an early seminal work “The Secret Book of Artephius” as well as inventing the bain-marie.
Sir Isaac Newton, Britain’s most famous alchemist, was inspired by “The Secret Book of Artephius” and acknowledged the help he had received from others in his work in a letter, stating “if I have seen further I have done so by standing on the shoulders of giants”.
This was later paraphrased on the edge of the British £2 coin – “standing on the shoulders of giants”
